Welcome to Staying for Breakfast, Coming for Dinner's newsletter.

Just because it's past Labor Day and you've gone back to work doesn't mean that you shouldn't take advantage of the lingering hot days before fall kicks in (and if you live in San Francisco, it's actually feeling like summer now, so...). So call up or email some friends and have a BBQ this weekend while the days are still long-ish.

A LATE SUMMER BBQ:

Cabin BBQ Sauce
Why buy BBQ sauce when you can make one that tastes a million times better with almost no effort? Make up a batch and marinate your favorite meat and get grilling!

The Best Potato Salad in the World
And what goes great with a BBQ? Potato salad.

Grilled Asparagus
Not a recipe so much as a suggestion, and a trick for being able to grill asparagus without it falling through the grill and onto the coals. Get some skewers and make little asparagus fences by pushing one skewer through the stalk at the bottom, and one skewer closer to the top, repeating until you run out of room on the skewer(s). This not only makes sure that the asparagus won't fall through your grill, it makes it a hell of a lot easier to flip them.

Once you've got your asparagus fences, lay them on a sheet pan (or some other kind of pan with a lip) and splash olive oil and dry vermouth over them, and crack some black pepper over them. Make sure to rub the oil and vermouth and pepper over all of them. It should only take about 5 minutes or so per side to get them nicely cooked and a little charred, so figure for 10 - 15 minutes for them on the grill.

Enjoy!
